About The Author

Kathleen Erin Hogg, born on June 3, 1939, in Alexandria, Louisiana, was the youngest among her eight siblings. Her parents, Gladys and Charles Wingrove Hogg raised her in a loving family. Charles, her father, was a disabled World War I veteran. From a young age, Kathleen had a vivid imagination and a passion for storytelling. Even at the age of six, she would create original narratives to entertain herself before falling asleep.

At the age of 16, Kathleen’s life took a significant turn when she met U.S. Air Force Second Lieutenant Ross Eugene Woodiwiss at a dance. Their connection was instant, and they tied the knot the following year. Kathleen’s love for writing continued to grow, and she embarked on her literary journey while living at a military outpost in Japan. It was there that she wrote her first book, penning every word in longhand.

Kathleen’s breakthrough came in 1972 when she released her novel, “The Flame and the Flower.” This book marked a turning point in the world of romance novels. It became an instant sensation, capturing the hearts of readers and earning a spot on the New York Times bestseller list. The novel introduced a new era of historical romance, featuring a strong heroine and passionate love scenes. Despite facing rejection from agents and hardcover publishers who deemed the book “too long,” Kathleen persevered. Instead of rewriting the novel, she submitted it to paperback publishers. Avon, the first publisher on her list, recognized the book’s potential and quickly acquired the rights. They arranged an initial print run of 500,000 copies, and “The Flame and the Flower” went on to sell over 2.3 million copies within its first four years of publication.

Kathleen’s success with “The Flame and the Flower” revolutionized the romance genre. Her unique style of writing focused on historical fiction, delving into the monogamous relationships between heroines in distress and the heroes who rescued them, even if they were the ones who put them in danger. Her subsequent novels followed this pattern, featuring intricate plots, controversial situations, and steamy love scenes. Kathleen’s impact on the literary world was undeniable, and her contributions to the romance genre continue to inspire authors to this day.

Outside of her writing career, Kathleen had a passion for horse riding. She once resided in a spacious home situated on 55 acres of land in Minnesota, where she indulged in her love for horses.
