Original price was: $11.95.Current price is: $7.62.

Byron Katie’s first two books focused on the idea that questioning the thoughts that cause suffering can lead to the end of that suffering. In her latest book, A Thousand Names for Joy, she takes this idea further by encouraging readers to discover the freedom that comes from self-inquiry. To help her explore this concept, Stephen Mitchell, a well-known translator of the Tao Te Ching, selected excerpts from the ancient text that Katie uses to discuss essential issues such as life and death, love, work, and fulfillment. The result is a book that offers timeless insights from the Tao Te Ching while also providing a glimpse into Katie’s life and her approach to living.

What sets A Thousand Names for Joy apart is the authenticity of Katie’s wisdom. Her insights are not theoretical but come from her own experiences. She shares stories of how she remains joyous and at ease in all circumstances, whether she is dancing with her granddaughter or facing a life-threatening situation. Through her stories, Katie shows readers that the awakened mind is not something unattainable but something that we all have access to. About The Author

Byron Katie, also known as Byron Kathleen Mitchell, is a renowned American speaker, writer, and the creator of a powerful self-inquiry method called The Work of Byron Katie. Her journey towards developing this method began when she found herself in the depths of severe depression during her early thirties. At that time, she was not only a businesswoman but also a devoted mother residing in Barstow, a small town nestled in the high desert of southern California. Over almost ten years, she found herself trapped in a downward spiral of paranoia, anger, self-hatred, and constant thoughts of ending her own life. The situation became so dire that she was often confined to her bedroom, unable to face the outside world.

However, everything changed for Katie one fateful morning in February 1986. She was residing in a halfway house for women struggling with eating disorders when she experienced a profound realization that would alter the course of her life forever. In that transformative moment, she discovered a fundamental truth – that her suffering was directly linked to her belief in her thoughts. She realized that when she chose not to believe her thoughts, she no longer experienced suffering. This revelation, she realized, applied to every human being. It was a simple yet profound understanding that freedom from suffering was within everyone’s reach. From that moment on, Katie found a deep sense of joy within herself that never wavered, even for a single moment.

Word of Katie’s remarkable transformation quickly spread, and people began seeking her out, eager to learn how they too could find the same freedom and peace that radiated from her. As more and more individuals shared their experiences of transformation through The Work, Katie was invited to share her method publicly in various locations across California, and eventually throughout the United States, Europe, and the rest of the world.

The Work has often been compared to the Socratic method and Zen meditation, but it is important to note that Katie does not align herself with any specific religion or tradition. She describes self-inquiry as a way to embody, through words, the profound questioning that awakened within her on that life-changing February morning. Over the years, Katie has touched the lives of millions of people through her public events, reaching out to diverse settings such as prisons, hospitals, churches, V.A. treatment centers, corporations, universities, and schools. Participants who have attended her weekend workshops, the intensive nine-day School for The Work, or the transformative twenty-eight-day residential Turnaround House have reported profound experiences and lasting transformations.
