Akin: A Novel
A retired professor from New York finds his quiet life upended when he decides to take a trip to the French Riviera with his young great-nephew. This journey is not just a vacation; it’s a quest to uncover the secrets of his mother’s past during the war, and it’s penned by the talented Emma Donoghue, known for her gripping narratives.
Noah Selvaggio, a widower and former chemistry professor, has lived on the Upper West Side for years, but his roots trace back to the South of France. As he prepares for his long-awaited return to Nice, he stumbles upon some old photographs that hint at a hidden family history, igniting a desire to learn more about his mother’s experiences during a tumultuous time.
Just as Noah is about to voyage on this personal journey, he receives an unexpected call from social services. It turns out he is the closest relative to an eleven-year-old great-nephew named Michael, who urgently needs a guardian. Despite having never met the boy, Noah feels a sense of duty and decides to bring Michael along on his trip.
The two of them, a mismatched pair, navigate the vibrant yet complex landscape of Nice, which still bears the scars of its past. Their initial interactions are filled with bickering and cultural clashes, as they grapple with everything from local cuisine to the nuances of modern technology.
As the days unfold, Noah begins to see beyond Michael’s brash exterior and recognizes the boy’s sharp humor and tech-savvy skills as valuable assets in their quest. Together, they delve into the family’s history, uncovering unsettling truths that connect them across generations.
Through their shared experiences, they understand the lengths people will go to for their loved ones, revealing a bond that transcends their age difference. This poignant tale, rich with emotional depth and humor, captures the essence of their journey as they confront the past and forge a new narrative together, reminiscent of the heartfelt storytelling that made Donoghue’s previous works so beloved.
Emma Donoghue
I spent my childhood in Ireland, soaking up the rich culture and landscapes that shaped my early years. In my twenties, I made the move to England, where I dove deep into my studies, focusing on a PhD in eighteenth-century literature. After completing my academic journey, I found a new home in Canada, where I’ve continued to explore my passion for storytelling.
My writing career has been quite diverse, but I’m probably most recognized for my work titled ROOM, which has made its mark as a novel, a film, and a play. This project showcases my ability to weave complex narratives that resonate with audiences across different mediums. Beyond ROOM, I’ve also penned a variety of contemporary and historical novels, and short stories, and even ventured into non-fiction and theatre, all while keeping a playful spirit in my middle-grade novels.
Each of these writing endeavors reflects my journey and the influences I’ve gathered along the way. Whether it’s the lush landscapes of Ireland, the academic rigor of England, or the vibrant culture of Canada, these experiences have enriched my storytelling. I love exploring different genres and formats, and I’m always excited to see where my imagination will take me next, whether it’s delving into the past or crafting tales for younger readers.
