About The Author

Fern Michaels is not just a name, but rather a representation of who I am, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was known as Ruth. However, when I entered the business world, I adopted the name Mary, as it was customary to use first names. Even today, my family and friends affectionately call me Dink, a nickname given to me by my father when I was born. Nevertheless, I respond to Fern, as it is a name that people find easier to pronounce.

The past has shaped my journey thus far. After raising my five children, my husband urged me to find employment. Although I lacked professional skills, I had always been an avid reader, immersing myself in the world of books from a young age. The library held a special place in my heart, and it still does today. Instead of facing the outside world unprepared, I decided to embark on a new adventure and write a book. Surprisingly, the prospect did not intimidate me. As my now ex-husband remarked, sometimes foolishness leads to unexpected success. And indeed, I proved him wrong. I have authored an impressive 99 books, many of which have become New York Times Best Sellers.

Several years ago, I made significant changes in my life. I left Ballantine Books, parted ways with my agent, and sold my long-time residence in New Jersey. In 1993, I relocated to South Carolina, seeking a fresh start. I believed that if I were to face any challenges, it would be best to confront them all at once. The transition was surprisingly smooth, as my children had already become independent by then. I settled into a 300-year-old plantation house, listed in the National Registry, which I lovingly renovated. Today, the house, along with its breathtaking gardens and ancient Angel Oaks adorned with Spanish moss, is truly a sight to behold. Unfortunately, I have been unable to convince the resident ghost to relocate, as it has been documented by previous owners.
