About The Author
Jane Austen, born on December 16, 1775, at Steventon near Basingstoke, was the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She resided in Steventon until her family relocated to Bath upon her father’s retirement in 1801. Following her father’s passing in 1805, she accompanied her mother on various journeys until they finally settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire in 1809. With the exception of occasional trips to London, she remained in Chawton until May 1817 when she moved to Winchester to be closer to her physician.
Tragically, she passed away there on July 18, 1817. During her youth, Jane Austen crafted stories, often satirical renditions of popular romances. Her works underwent extensive revisions before being published, with four novels released during her lifetime: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816). Following her demise, two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published in 1818, accompanied by a biographical notice written by her brother, Henry Austen.
This marked the first official acknowledgment of her authorship. Persuasion, written amidst declining health in 1815-16, was a testament to her determination. Additionally, she left behind two earlier compositions: a brief epistolary novel titled Lady Susan and an unfinished work known as The Watsons. At the time of her passing, she was in the midst of creating a new novel, Sanditon, of which only a fragmentary draft remains.
Davis Allen –
Jane Austen is my all-time favorite classic author. I don’t believe there is one book from her collections I do not like. Must read if you like classics.
