Stephen King’s life was shaped by his family and his upbringing. Born in Portland, Maine, he was the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. His father left the family when Stephen was just two years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his older brother, David. They moved around quite a bit during Stephen’s childhood, spending time in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Stratford, Connecticut, before finally settling in Durham, Maine, when Stephen was eleven.

This move was prompted by his mother’s desire to care for her aging parents, who were no longer able to care for themselves. Despite the challenges of his upbringing, Stephen excelled academically. He attended grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, where he graduated in 1966. While at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper and was active in student politics.

He graduated in 1970 with a degree in English and was qualified to teach at the high school level. However, a draft board examination found him unfit for military service due to various health issues. After graduation, Stephen struggled to find work as a teacher and instead worked as a laborer at an industrial laundry. He also began to sell his short stories to men’s magazines, eventually making his first professional sale in 1967. In 1971, he married Tabitha Spruce, whom he had met while working at the university library.

Together, they faced financial struggles as Stephen continued to pursue his writing career. Despite these challenges, Stephen’s talent as a writer was undeniable. He went on to become one of the most successful and prolific authors of our time, with over 60 novels and countless short stories to his name. His work has been adapted into numerous films and television shows, and he has won numerous awards for his contributions to the literary world.
