True Love Has the Worst Aim

“Helnwein debuts in striking fashion… The writing, especially the dialogue, is magnetic, honest, and brimming with caustic wit… [an] enrapturing take on the intense highs and lows of teenage love.” ―Booklist (Starred Review)

“Wildly real and bursting with all the romance and pain of coming into oneself.” ―Kirkus (Starred Review)

“Helnwein frankly conveys the joy, fear, and awkwardness of an all-consuming first love, poignantly depicting Gracie’s growth: particularly the hard-won knowledge that she can exist ‘just by the sheer force of herself,’ and the grace she learns to show herself and others.” ―Publishers Weekly

Description

Slingshot

Mercedes Helnwein’s Slingshot is a thrilling novel that marks her impressive debut in the contemporary young adult genre. This book is a must-read for fans of acclaimed authors Rainbow Rowell and Mary H. K. Choi, as it offers a unique and refreshing take on love and relationships.

The protagonist, Grace Welles, finds herself trapped in a less-than-ideal boarding school located in the swamps of Florida. To cope with her surroundings, Grace adopts a self-imposed isolation, keeping others at bay with her aloof and distant attitude. This strategy seems to work for her, as it minimizes the risk of losing friends. However, everything changes when she unexpectedly comes to the rescue of Wade Scholfield, a new student who is being bullied.

Grace Welles

As Grace’s world is turned upside down, she is forced to reevaluate her approach to life and discover a new way of existing. With Wade by her side, the rules of the school become optional, and their unconventional conversations about wormholes lead to unexpected make-out sessions. Despite the imperfections, being together with Wade brings a sense of simplicity and joy that Grace never thought possible. However, their relationship takes a heartbreaking turn, leaving Grace to question why she has caused such pain. This debut novel is a hilarious and addictive read that explores the complexities of love and the challenges of finding and maintaining a connection with someone special.
