Excerpt

Initially, it is important to establish that I have a deep appreciation for myself. I take pride in who I am, unapologetically. Specifically, I hold a special affection for Miss Queenisha Renae Sutton, a tall, well-proportioned, attractive woman. Despite any imperfections or criticisms that may come my way, I embrace every aspect of myself with confidence and self-assurance. Some may interpret this as vanity or an inflated sense of self, but to me, it is simply a reflection of self-love and acceptance.

In contemporary society, there seems to be a prevalent issue among many individuals, particularly among my fellow black women, who are constantly seeking validation and love from external sources. The pursuit of an idealized “good black man” often leads to neglecting one’s self-worth and value. However, I refuse to fall into this pattern of seeking love and approval from others before loving myself. My mother is wise and spiritually connected, instilled in me the importance of self-love as the foundation for all other relationships.

The High Price of a Good Man

The wisdom passed down from mothers, like my own, who have experienced life’s trials and tribulations, is invaluable. It is crucial to heed the advice and guidance of those who have navigated the complexities of love and self-acceptance. While not every mother may have attained this level of understanding, those who have are a beacon of light for those seeking to cultivate a deep sense of self-love. Embracing one’s unique qualities and finding contentment in one’s skin is a journey that requires introspection, self-care, and a willingness to prioritize self-love above seeking validation from external sources.

The High Price of a Good Man- Continued

Society often places unrealistic expectations and standards on individuals, particularly women, to conform to a certain image or ideal. However, I have learned to reject these societal pressures and instead focus on embracing my unique qualities and attributes. I understand that true beauty and self-worth come from within, and no external validation or approval can compare to the love and acceptance I have for myself.

Self-love is not about arrogance or thinking that I am better than others. It is about recognizing my worth and treating myself with the kindness, respect, and compassion that I deserve. By prioritizing self-love, I can set healthy boundaries, make choices that align with my values, and surround myself with people who uplift and support me.

It is important to note that self-love is not a destination, but rather an ongoing journey. It requires constant self-reflection, self-care, and a commitment to personal growth. I understand that there will be days when I may doubt myself or face challenges, but through self-love, I can bounce back and continue to embrace who I am, my flaws and all.

Self Love

By embracing self-love, I can radiate confidence and inspire others to do the same. I believe that when individuals truly love and accept themselves, they can create positive change in their lives and the world around them. Self-love is not selfish, but rather a necessary foundation for personal happiness and fulfillment.

In a society that often tries to tear individuals down and make them feel inadequate, self-love is a radical act of resistance. It is a way to reclaim power and control over one’s narrative and to reject the harmful messages that society tries to impose. By loving and accepting myself, I can defy societal norms and expectations and live authentically and unapologetically.

Ultimately, self-love is a lifelong commitment to myself. It is a promise to always prioritize my well-being, happiness, and growth. Through self-love, I can navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience, and create a life that is truly fulfilling and meaningful. I am proud to say that I am deeply appreciative of myself, and I will continue to embrace and celebrate every aspect of who I am.
