Ted Arnold
Tedd was born in Elmira, New York, and grew up in a lively household with three brothers, making for a bustling family of six. For several years, they lived on a farm in Pennsylvania, where Tedd likely experienced the joys and challenges of rural life. When he turned ten, his family moved back to Elmira, but soon after, they relocated to Gainesville, Florida, due to his father’s job.
It was in Gainesville that Tedd discovered his passion for art, taking his first lessons in an old dentist’s office that was situated above a pool hall called Happy Hour. This early exposure to creativity eventually led him to earn a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
After completing his education, Tedd and his wife, Carol, settled in Tallahassee, where they began their family. Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator, using his artistic skills to create various visual projects. His journey as a children’s author took off with the birth of their first son, Walter, who inspired Tedd’s first picture book titled No Jumping on the Bed!
Following that success, Tedd’s second son, William, became the star of the sequel, No More Water in the Tub! Over the years, Tedd has published more than 100 books, showcasing his talent as both an author and an illustrator, captivating the imaginations of children everywhere.
Outside of his writing and illustrating, Tedd enjoys a variety of hobbies, including sketching, reading, traveling, and even building things like a garden shed and a tree house. He credits his wife, Carol, for sparking his interest in creating children’s books. As a kindergarten teacher, she had a collection of picture books that fascinated Tedd with their vibrant illustrations and the way the text and images interacted.
He loves engaging with his young readers, who often ask him where he gets his ideas. Tedd finds this question challenging to answer because inspiration can strike in many ways—sometimes while he’s driving or walking, and other times through reading or research. Many of his ideas come from the everyday antics of his sons like the time he found Walter praying silently on the couch, which sparked a memorable story idea.
