Description

Verbal Judo

Consider the frequency with which you find yourself on the unfavorable side of a discussion. It is intriguing to reflect on how much of your overall success in life hinges on your ability to communicate effectively. Research suggests that for many individuals, this figure could be as high as 98 percent or even more.

This statistic underscores the importance of mastering conversational skills, as they play a pivotal role in both personal and professional realms. The ability to articulate thoughts clearly and persuasively can significantly influence outcomes in various situations.

When faced with a challenging conversation, whether in the workplace, at home, or even in potentially dangerous situations, do you have a strategy in place? Or do you find yourself responding instinctively, driven by emotions or ingrained habits?

The distinction between reacting and responding is crucial; as George Thompson aptly points out, reacting means allowing the situation to dictate your actions, while responding signifies that you are in command of the interaction. This awareness can transform the way you engage with others, leading to more constructive outcomes.

The philosophy of Verbal Judo offers valuable insights into enhancing your communication skills. It teaches you not only how to listen and articulate your thoughts more effectively but also how to connect with others through empathy, which is often regarded as one of the most impactful elements of communication.

By learning to navigate common conversational pitfalls and employing a straightforward, memorable strategy, you can improve your ability to convey your perspective and gain the upper hand in discussions. This approach not only fosters better understanding but also cultivates a more harmonious environment in which dialogue can thrive.

George J. Thompson, Ph.D

Dr. Thompson, affectionately known as “Doc Rhino,” was the visionary behind the Verbal Judo Institute, which he established to promote effective communication strategies. From 1983 until his passing in 2011, he dedicated his life to training over 700,000 individuals in the art of Tactical Communications.

This innovative program, which he created in 1983, focuses on the use of language as a tool for de-escalating conflicts and constructively guiding behavior. His approach emphasizes the power of words in transforming potentially volatile situations into opportunities for understanding and resolution.

An accomplished academic, Doc Rhino earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University in 1963, followed by a Master’s and Doctorate in English from the University of Connecticut, which he completed in 1972. His pursuit of knowledge did not stop there; he furthered his expertise with post-doctoral studies in Rhetoric and Persuasion at Princeton University in 1979.

Throughout his career, he authored and published four influential books on Tactical Communications, contributing significantly to the field and providing valuable resources for those seeking to enhance their communication skills.

Dr. Thompson’s work gained widespread recognition, with his training methodologies featured in numerous national media outlets, including NBC, ABC, CBS News, and CNN. His insights were also showcased in programs such as 48 Hours and Inside Edition, as well as in various print publications like the LA Times and NY Post.

His contributions to the field of communication have left a lasting impact, inspiring countless individuals to adopt more effective and empathetic communication practices in their personal and professional lives.
